Marsh University Combines Peer-to-Peer Learning with Social and Collaborative Tools

Marsh, the world’s leading insurance broker and risk advisor, today announced that it has been named to this year’s InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the nation’s most innovative users of business technology. Marsh was selected for its development of Marsh University, an internal collaboration and knowledge sharing platform for Marsh colleagues around the world. The 2011 list was revealed Tuesday night at a gala awards ceremony at the exclusive InformationWeek 500 Conference taking place at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point, CA.

“Leveraging elements of social media platforms, Marsh University has served as an online community for Marsh colleagues, through which they can access enhanced training and development opportunities to help them deliver superior services to Marsh’s clients,” said Jim Lee, Chief Information Officer for Marsh’s U.S. & Canada Division. “Marsh’s selection to the InformationWeek 500 reflects our focus on using technology effectively for the benefit of colleagues and clients.”

Marsh University, launched in 2010, is a unique collaboration platform that allows Marsh to capture the collective wealth of resources and knowledge of Marsh’s workforce, which includes 25,000 colleagues in more than 100 countries. Through blogs, videos, and other social media functionality, Marsh University allows colleagues to share and find these resources, positioning them to deliver industry-leading insurance and risk management services to Marsh’s clients in more than 20 industries.

“For any organization with a large employee base and wide geographic footprint, providing a method for employees to leverage people, resources, and knowledge across the organization can be challenging,” said Ben Brooks, Marsh’s Human Capital Performance Practice Leader. “Marsh University provides colleagues with such access in an easy-to-use and engaging way, especially important as the insurance workforce becomes younger. Marsh University gives our colleagues the resources they need to provide enhanced services for our clients, and reflects our commitment to making Marsh a great place to work for outstanding people.”

“For 23 years, the InformationWeek 500 has chronicled and honored the most innovative users of business technology,” said InformationWeek Editor In Chief Rob Preston. “In this day and age, however, being innovative isn’t enough. Companies and their IT organizations need to innovate faster than ever before to stay a step or two ahead of their customers, partners, and competitors. This year’s ranking placed special emphasis on those high-octane business technology innovators.”

InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America’s best-known companies.  Top winners have included:  The Vanguard Group, CME Group, Conway, National Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark, Hilton Hotels and Unum.  The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
