Marsh Insights: Dryer Fires
Published: 13-Feb- 2012 | Comments: 0

You may not realize this, but a clothes dryer can be a major fire hazard within your restaurant establishment.
No matter how new the dryer, it’s a fire risk.
Fires begin in clothes dryers for a number of reasons including:
- Lint getting trapped in air outflow pipes as well as in the lint trap that can catch on fire;
- Motors burning out; and
- Clothing and rags that are not completely washed and remaining saturated with grease, cooking oil, fish oils, and various cleaning agents
which become volatile as the temperature rises.

One solution which entirely eliminates the hazard is to utilize off-site linen cleaning services. By having employees deposit soiled linens and rags in metal receptacles and having a third-partypick-up and replenish linens on a regular basis, the hazard is avoided.
