EXPOPLU$ Convention Cancellation Insurance Plan
There’s enough to worry about when planning an event. You shouldn’t have to worry about Airline Delays, Blizzards, Building Renovations, Fire Damage to Hotel, Gas Leaks, Hurricanes, Power Failures, Sickness, Disease, Speaker Cancellations, Strikes, Tornados, Union “Slowdowns,” and Hotel Attrition.

EXPOPLU$ provides comprehensive coverage for any of the additional expenses or lost revenue if caused by unforeseen circumstances beyond your control.

These could include fire, collapse, or destruction of the hotel or convention centre; strikes involving labour, transportation, and services; adverse weather, such as blizzards, floods, tornados, hurricanes; earthquakes, sickness and/or disease (except where travel advisories apply), and power loss.

In addition, EXPOPLU$ provides all-risk protection for covered personal property owned, leased, or rented by your organization while at your event or in transit for up to $150,000. Also, EXPOPLU$ reimburses you for theft of on-site registration receipts of up to $125,000.

In accordance with your policy, how many ways can you sustain losses and still be reimbursed for your expenses and lost income?

  • Hotel Attrition. If you fall short of your hotel room commitment, Hotel Penalty Charge Coverage is available up to a limit of $10,000.
  • Cancellation. Because of unexpected circumstances, you may not be able to open your event at all during the time you planned. You would be forced to change your dates completely, perhaps even move to a different location. EXPOPLU$ is designed to cover this.
  • Terrorism Coverage. For cancellation, curtailment, postponement or abandonment of any event. Coverage is available with limits up to $500,000. Customized options are available for your event.
  • Postponement. If you aren’t able to start on the day you originally planned because circumstances prevent it, the EXPOPLU$ Plan would cover your losses.
  • Curtailment or Abandonment. Some emergency may cause you to close your event unexpectedly. Your lost revenues would be covered.
  • Removal to Alternate Premises. You might have to move to a different site before you can open, or you may be forced to move while your event is already in progress. EXPOPLU$ would pay for the losses you incur plus the additional expenses of moving to another location.
  • Failure to Vacate. Unexpected circumstances, making it impossible to vacate the premises, could force you to stay longer than the terms of your lease. Your additional expenses would be covered under EXPOPLU$.
  • Enforced Reduced Attendance of the Attendees, Exhibitors, etc.

Important Questions and Answers

Why do I need to insure our convention or meeting?
Have you ever considered what would happen if your event had to be cancelled—because of a fire or the collapse of the convention hall or meeting centre; because of an airline strike or a hotel workers’ strike; because of a flood, blizzard, tornado, hurricane or earthquake? When considering the revenue generated by your convention or meeting, you realize how vulnerable you are to unpredictable circumstance—circumstances beyond your control. Hotel penalty charges can be covered up to a limit.

What is covered by EXPOPLU$? The plan provides comprehensive coverage for the cancellation, postponement, abandonment and curtailment of your convention or meeting. It even pays for your financial loss due to reduced attendance resulting from a covered peril.

EXPOPLU$ also provides coverage for non-appearance of principal speakers who contribute to the success of your event.

If there is an emergency and you are unable to vacate the convention hall or meeting centre as planned, EXPOPLU$ pays for the additional expenses.

EXPOPLU$ provides all-risk protection for your organization’s personal property going to and from and while at your convention up to $150,000. Coverage for theft of on-site registration receipts is up to $125,000.

How much insurance do I need? To help ensure that you are fully covered if there is a claim, it is important that you consider all of your event-related revenues, commitments and expenditures.

Your insurance should include your out-of-pocket expenses in organizing the event. It should also include those financial commitments for which you are responsible for in case your event is cancelled and include the income you expect to generate from the event above and beyond your expenses.

When is the best time to apply for EXPOPLU$? Right now! Most event planners apply for EXPOPLU$ while they are preparing their event budget. That enables them to include the modest cost for this insurance in their budget.

If your budget is already prepared, apply immediately. You probably have already incurred expenses for your next event or meeting; therefore, you should be insuring those expenses right away. The cost of this coverage is structured so that it fits into a well-planned budget.

What is not covered?
The policy cannot provide coverage for lack of support of the event or the financial failure of any party. Standard exclusions such as war, radioactive contamination, and claims for circumstances of which you are currently aware are not covered.

How comprehensive is the coverage? EXPOPLU$ was specifically designed to provide all of the protection needed to insure against the cancellation, postponement or curtailment of a convention, or meeting. It is being offered exclusively through the Marsh Canada Limited. Most policies do not include such important coverage as: strikes, hotel attrition, earthquake, power failure, gas leak, airline cancellation, sickness and/or disease (except where travel advisories apply), failure to vacate the event premises, non-appearance of a principle speaker, enforced reduced attendance of the attendees and exhibitors at your exhibitions and trade shows, and coverage for your personal property or event receipts.

Would any other insurance policy cover the cancellation of my convention? Standard insurance policies were designed to protect you against claims resulting from bodily injury or damage to the property of others.

EXPOPLU$ is a policy specifically designed to insure you against the financial losses you would face if your event was cancelled, postponed or curtailed—or if it suffered reduced attendance.
